My questions are ONE, what do the cleft palate parents out there know about z-plasty and p-flap? From what I know it is two different procedures having the same goal in mind (rebuilding soft palate which is crucial for speech). I think (?) z-plasty is a newer technique and our surgeon said he does p-flap because it is what he learned in med school. We would have to change surgeons if we went with z-plasty..TWO, anyone ever gotten a second opinion and changed what procedures (or were given a choice)? I have had both explained to me and it sounds like z-plasty is not as painful or recovery as long. We have been warned p-flap is a very painful and long recovery. THREE, for those who have done one or the other, have you been happy with the results?
Of course we want to do what is best for Hudson and the best possible speech outcome for him. I have researched both but know those speaking from experience is also a great tool and helpful in decision making.
Thanks!! (you can email me privately at teagues5@msn.com)

That picture looks sort of like what A did the other day. He fell asleep on his knees in the kitchen chair. Will email you about the other.
Hudson always looks so sweet even in sleep and "dawg tired". Love ya.

Hi Sharron,
Thinking of you. We just got back from Children's for Andy's Cleft Day. Sure is confusing at times. You will get some great advice from all those BTDT parents. How lucky we are to have each other! Hudson is too cute!
Lately I feel like I'm falling asleep in my chair too...
I have no information for you, but will be praying that the right info comes to you as you prepare for what lies ahead!
Our daughter is scheduled for double z plasty on march 4th. I asked if it ever resulted in sleep apnea and he said no, it is not possible with the z technique. We go to Dr. Matthews in Charlotte NC.
Sharon - oh, how I wish I knew something about this to share with you....I know first hand how frustrating it is to be your child's advocate and have so many things "pop" up. I will pray for the right answers to come, and for peace in your heart that you are headed in the right direction. Love from a VERY snowed in girl in PA!!
Hi Sharon, I just spoke with Dr. Genecov's nurse and she sent me KayLi's surgical notes. I'll be passing them on to you. He uses a new technique created by Dr. Sawyer (goole him, he's awesome) called a two flap palatoplasty. It has wonderful success rates. She also suggested that you come in to see them for a second opinion and that they can better explain why they do what they do. Everyone including KayLi's speech therapist is amazed at how there is NO nasal air flow when she speaks and at how quickly she is learning. KayLi doesn't have sleep apnea so we never discussed it. I'm so sorry you are facing these decisions and I pray that God will guide you and give you peace.
I'll be e-mailing soon.
Blessings,
Lisa
Feel free to cruise around my blog. My little one just had her surgery on November 16 so you will need to scroll back to that.
I think you need to get a second opinion on your child's situation. I too would be very concerned that your doctor only know "one way" to address your child's needs. If he had such large tonsils then why in the world would air be escaping?? Too many conflicting questions I think. I would go for the 2nd opinion!
OUr son has had numerous surgeries for his cleft palate... they were all z-plastys. I am sure I would have been fine if they would have been the p-flaps. I guess for me, I want to make sure the doctor does what he is most familiar doing.
interesting article. I would love to follow you on twitter.
i just found your post re. p-flap... Our son had a p-flap last october and I regret it. He has had 4 months of obstructed breathing and apnea - and it is terrible. Every night I feel he is suffering horribly. If there are new techniques - please check them out. What I understand that every surgery limits the opportnity to do the other kind due to scar tissue. I switched surgeons to do this surgery - and I doubt myself every day. No one knows what to do. We have had a sleep study - and he stops breathing 36 times an hour. Please check out your options. I am so sad about this. Kris
